Lessons Learned Word Cloud

Below are the three major points/lessons learned from ACOM 5308 this summer.

Social Media Tools

There are numerous social media tools available and new ones are constantly being added to the mix, making it hard to keep up. I really enjoyed learning about the various social media tools, but in particular the new ones assigned to us to research. I’m glad I was assigned Storify because not only did I learn about it, but hopefully can utilize it in the classroom and develop an innovative idea poster to present at a conference. Furthermore, I’m excited about my research proposal of utilizing Pinterest in the agriculture classroom. This is a newer social media tool and I’m excited to see how students will perceive utilizing it in the classroom.

Web Design Trends in 2012

Web design is ever evolving and I really enjoyed learning about this year’s trends. I see new and innovative Web designs often, but have never thought about putting them in the category of trend. Some which stood out to me were:

I think these stood out to me the most because they are innovative and hopefully I can integrate learning how to create some, like the big vector art, in my graphic design class in the fall. Furthermore, it’s important to keep up with the trends and changing design schemas in order to stay abreast of what consumers are demanding and what the industry is leaning toward.

Mobile Devices and Apps

I do not have a smartphone (I know it’s just crazy) so learning about the various apps you can download (because I do have an iPod and an iPad) really intrigued me. Mobile devices and apps are an integral part of everyday life. Mobile devices are replacing landline phones and apps are important features businesses and organizations can create to entice their customers and/or target audience. One app in particular that stood out to me is the SCVNGR app. I’m the social chair for the Agricultural Education and Communications Graduate Organization (AECGO) and one thing I have been tossing around in my head is to do a scavenger hunt for the new graduate students in order to help them learn various parts and important buildings on campus. Especially since there will be agricultural communications students involved, I think learning how to use this app and incorporating it would be a fun and new way to conduct a scavenger hunt.

Note: I created a word cloud because I want to incorporate reflective word clouds in my class in the fall and I thought this would be a great assignment for me to test it out.

I currently work for the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in the Animal Science Department. I'm the Specialty Livestock/Youth Education Specialist. I have a Ph.D. in agricultural communications from Texas Tech, a master's in agricultural leadership from the University of Georgia, and a bachelor's in animals science from the University of Arkansas. I love all things agriculture, particularly livestock. I also like to bake, cook, can, sew, and play with my dog child, Shooter.
